Obstetrics – LABOR AND DELIVERY

When an expectant mother’s due date approaches, she may look for the signs of the start of labor. Certain signs may suggest that labor will soon begin. It is important for the mother to be aware of the changes that her body is going through as it prepares for labor, and what she can expect as the labor process begins. If a mother suspects that she may indeed be in labor, she should contact her doctor or midwife immediately.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF LABOR?

As labor approaches, some mothers may experience an impulse to get the house ready for the baby (commonly referred to as “nesting”), although not all women experience it. As the body begins to prepare for labor and delivery, the baby may move into the lower part of the pelvis or “drop”. The cervix may begin to thin and soften. An expecting mother may experience clear or slightly bloody Vaginal discharge a few days before labor begins. Some additional signs of labor include:

Some mothers experience “false” contractions called Braxton Hicks contractions. It may help to time the contractions to determine whether they are true contractions or Braxton Hicks contractions. True contractions last about 30 to 90 seconds and become more frequent and intense.
